Ngora District is an area of extreme poverty and very few young people are able to access secondary education or training. Dolen Ffermio has acquired an excellent site for the Institute on 8 acres of land, with plenty of space for classrooms, a library and workshops, as well as fields for permaculture and agroforestry training, livestock areas and fish ponds. Your gifts this year will be used for the development of the Institute through environmentally friendly building methods, tree and bamboo planting and permaculture food production.

We’re looking to match the £6,000 raised last year, to benefit many more young people through education, IT skills, and vocational training (to required government standards), as well as providing facilities to develop all their talents in the arts, music and sport. These skills will lead to more jobs so that these young people can support their families.

Goats and training

Goats are of great importance to the livelihoods of rural households in Uganda. In addition to providing meat, and in some areas, milk, they act as security, to be sold in a time of extra financial pressure such as medical expenses or school fees.

A goat-herd will be established at the Institute to provide training in management, and in the construction of suitable pens for housing.

Beehives and training

Bees will be vital for pollinating the fruit trees and food crops on the institute land. Wood will be bought, and students trained to make hives, which will be sited in the trees already planted.

Training will be given in managing bee colonies, and collecting honey, which is a very valuable commodity in Uganda, and apart from the nutrition it can provide much needed household income. Protective clothing purchased will be provided.

Tree and bamboo planting

Deforestation is the worst environmental problem in Uganda. Forests were cleared for commercial agriculture before the disastrous effects on soil and climate were realised. Trees are also cut down because wood is the only affordable cooking fuel for families.

Education in the need for tree and bamboo planting and the use of fuel efficient stoves will be a huge help in combating climate change. Introducing bamboo is important as it grows very fast and can replace timber in every way, including cooking fuel, building construction, furniture making, and absorption of carbon dioxide.

A gift of £20 can help to purchase a part of a solar system to provide much needed lighting for the initial outdoor activities of the Institute. Dusk begins in Uganda at 6.30pm every day of the year, therefore it is important to have lighting for studying, livestock care, and security in the evening.  Based in Wales and Uganda, Dolen Ffermio is a very small charity that aims to make a lasting difference by lending a hand where it’s needed most. We work closely with Ugandan communities, helping families to become self-sufficient through sustainable farming and skills training.
